More fall color and ALS Gala

The Field of Hope ALS Gala fundraiser, November 15th

Larry and I at the ALS (Lou Gehrig's) Gala. It's a fundraiser for research on ALS--an untreatable and terminal deterioration of the motor nervous system.

Dad and mom, one of the guests of honor. Mom has been diagnosed for 3 years. She has a slow form of progression. People with ALS are often completely paralyzed within a year or two of diagnosis. Mom can no longer swallow safely, so is now fed by my dad through her stomach tube. Dad does all of her care at home. Thanks to their friends from church, my dad doesn't have to cook much. My mom's friend comes over every other week and keeps her company plus cleans the house. It gives my dad a chance to take a break once in a while.

Relatives from both sides of the family. Turns out my 86 year old grandmother (far left) is an avid Scotch drinker. There was an open bar mixing some powerful drinks. Grandma had 3. Good thing she doesn't drive any more!

More Fall stuff

Project: knitted felted messenger bag. Fun to do!

Meisha's halloween costume: wooly bear caterpillar.

Above: a real wooly bear. This one is unusual and missing the orange band. According to Native tradition, the smaller the orange band, the colder the winter. Uh oh. Note that the photo was taken in September. It is only November 23rd and we have already had a week of below-freezing temperatures and snow. The sudden arrival of winter literally freeze-dried anything green left in my garden. The ski centers nearby have opened early. Makes you wonder ...

The Big Woods in October
October 18, we took a chilly but beautiful walk in the Big Woods and Big Field preserve. Our first frost of the season was the night before.

One more garden picture before winter:
Natural NY aster hybrid.
